Welcome to CoolerCrew.com. While our "big show" has always been the annual Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt during the St. Paul Winter Carnival, we keep track of over 100 treasure hunts associated with various festivals throughout Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. We are your one stop shop for all things treasure hunt! Apart from this site as a reference for current and past hunt information, we have other resources available as well:

  • The Water Cooler, Our forums; our primary discussion site. A significant number of Coolerheads prefer this format for discussion rather than a place with hundreds of topics where you have to keep track of each one. With Ableminds crashing, we figure it's time to get it working here.
  • Our Treasure Hunt discussion group on Facebook.
  • Our Facebook group for discussing things not related to the treasure hunt.
  • St. Paul Car Tag, a fun little game that we play when we're not looking for medallions.

You'll find that there isn't a lot of discussion in the Facebook group. Mostly clues as they come out for various hunts, and events like our annual Pre-dig Gig and Rehash Bash. Most of that can be found right here within this site. There tends to be a lot more discussion, particularly during the Pioneer Press hunt on Ableminds, or out in the park du jour during other hunts. Have a look around and feel free to join us. Hunt kickoffs, pity parties, and rehashes are always open to anyone who wants to show up!

And if you run into someone in the park and you want to know if they're a Coolerhead, just holler "you dig?".

Do these guys ever quit?

Not likely, but the Crew is now up to 5 finds in 2012. In addition to Barefootguy and Diggorius Rex''s Hugo find, and Cluey and me2''s White Bear Lake and Cottage Grove finds, Cluey and me2 are also the happy finders of the Little Canada and New Brighton medallions as well. Total winnings for the group: something on the order of $2125. Not bad, crew. Not bad.

Cooler Crew has 3 finds in 2012

The Cooler Crew has found the treasure medallions in 3 of thes festival hunts in 2012. Barefootguy and Diggorious Rex found the Hugo Good Neighbor Days Spike on June 10 near Clearwater Creek, while Me2 (and she insists Clue Master, but everyone else knows otherwise, something about keeping score on total finds) found the Cottage Grove Strawberry Fest Medallion in Hamlet Park on June 16.

2012 Pioneer Press Medallion found in Tony Schmidt Park

At approximately 2am, Lange Wallgren, of Osseo, found the 2012 Pioneer Press medallion in Tony Schmidt Park in Arden Hills. Lange will split the prize money with four other co-finders, Nate Buck of Cottage Grove and Corey Hargreaves of New Brighton,as well as Coolerheads Alex Valen of North Oaks and past finder Jake Ingebrigtson of St. Paul. The five had a gentlemen's agreement set up before the find to split the prize if they found it. It took the group 11 clues and hours of digging in Tony Schmidt to find the medallion and bring home $10,000.

Coolerheads on the News

WCCO interviewed a bunch of Coolerheads at the ABB on January 18. The stories will be featured on the January 20 morning news show, once in the 5am hour and once in the 6am hour, and possibly on Saturday morning. A separate story on Rob and Jake is planned for January 23, while one about Clue Master and his "tools" is planned for later in the week if the hunt goes that far. We'll be updating this story with the video links as they are posted.

New Twists on the Treasure Hunt for 2012

This year there are some interesting new twists on the Treasure Hunt.

For starters, the Pioneer Press is giving away the medallion used in the past 5 treasure hunts as a contest prize. We all have a chance to own a real piece of treasure hunt history.

2012 Treasure Hunt Clues To Be Released at Gabe's

From the "Didn't See That One Coming" Deparment, we just learned that Mr. Goodhue has decided that instead of releasing the clues at the Pioneer Press building, they will be released at Gabe's By The Park this year. It was announced on an update to a recycled story/video from the 2010 hunt. We don't know yet what this will mean for nightly pre- and post-clue gatherings or whether this is going to be a permanent change or just temporary as the Central Corridor construction is in progress. We'll see and keep you posted here.

Cooler Crew -- A History

During the 1990's, the St Paul Pioneer Press opened online discussion forums. These forums were called Water Coolers. The forums had discussion topics related to sports, politics, news, and current events. Each year, the Pioneer Planet — the online section of the Pioneer Press — opened a discussion forum as a media for hunters to discuss the clues for the Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt.

During the earlier years, one might find a few hundred posts during the hunt. As more hunters had computers, those numbers jumped. From 1997 to 1998, the number of posts increased from the hundreds to the 5-digit thousands. It was during the 1998 hunt the Cooler Crew was born.

The community spirit and teamwork displayed in the Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt thread was inspiring. The group of hunters found themselves at the end of a hunt not wanting to let go of new friendships and the camaraderie found on the Water Cooler board. The idea emerged to do what anyone would do in the middle of winter in Minnesota. A picnic in Cherokee was planned - the first Rehash Bash!
